What is the alcohol content of the viche?

Our experience has shown us that viche is a strong distilled liquor made from sugar cane juice in the rural areas of the Colombian Pacific by black communities. Its personality and high alcohol content of viche makes it a unique and flavorful drink.

Official regulations: How high?
The official regulation, Resolution 113 of 2024, defines the health requirements for viche and sets the alcohol content value for viche between 31% and 51%. This means that for every 1000ml of viche, there must be between 310ml and 510ml of alcohol. Any value below 31% or above 51% cannot be officially called viche.

Practice vs the law
In the last three years at La Vichería, we have tasted around 300 viches. An estimated calculation considering our trips to municipalities with viche-making vocation in the four departments of the Pacific, our participation in the Petronio, visits to bars and restaurants, and all the viches that arrive at our office in Cali.
We can say that the vast majority of Viches fall between 38% and 48% alcohol content, and that's how we like it. We like it for three reasons: a) clear, light viche generally has a higher alcohol concentration; b) the ancestral artisan techniques that producers apply in the tradition often result in stronger viche; and c) it's perfect for mixology, a path we are betting on to make viche the national branded spirit, as a cocktail with a strong distilled spirit like mezcal, gin, Brazilian cachaça, or viche has more personality.
